Getting to good water to Fly Fish
As you learn to fly fish and begin to discover all the great things about this sport, you have probably read more than your fair share of articles, watched about 120,789 videos on you tube, and any other media that you can get your hands on but you still have to be able to "get to good water to fly fish". With all of this online sleuth work there is one thing that you can only discover the hard way, and that is to go outside for yourself.

I have been blessed to have spent so much time outdoors in pursuit of a slimy little fish!!! The reason I say blessed is that I have been to some really cool places by accident. While planning a trip to a new area, or new watershed, only to get to this new location and discover that it’s totally awesome.
One of the great things about this sport is that as a consequence of trying to get to a good fishing spot you will no doubt discover some really amazing landscapes or locations.
One time I planned to go and do some recon on a little creek that was way up in the mountains. I looked at my maps on how to get there, I was ready. As I was traveling to this new secret location I was really disappointed about the landscape while I was enroute. All I could see out the windows of my truck was yucky flat brush and featureless hills.
So, pressing on, and finally arrived at the trailhead of my location, and setting out for my 1.5 mile hike. As I began to walk I was still not impressed with what I was seeing, but hiked on, nevertheless. After a while I began to descend into small draw where the water should be?? Soon the terrain began to change, I could see grasses and trees beginning to reveal themselves to me, and finally I could smell the sweet smell of water.
I could have just as well driven right [pass this spot never knowing that there was a nice creek at the bottom of this canyon.
I ended up fishing for a few a hours and catching a good number of fish. I was amazed at what a real gem that I had discovered.

As I get older I have become lazy, and my desire to walk for miles to catch fish is diminishing. I have no problem parking the car and walking for 10 minutes, to make a few casts. I have just as much fun now as I did back when.
I think the thing I want to impress upon you is that you should always keep an eye out for something new. I have very rarely been to a fishing spot and said to myself “what an ugly place”.
Sometimes getting to good water can be a bit of an effort, but no matter what the outcome of the trip it is always worth it. You get to experience places and people that you may have never had the chance to see or meet.
Have fun out there and keep a tight line.
